10 Must Have Free iPhone Apps in Every Social Marketer’s Arsenal

20 June, 2011 - Blog

Having been in the marketing game for a long time I can honestly say that some of the best tools of the trade are completely free. While most of social based marketing might happen online, there’s no lack of iPhone apps to help you get the job done just as well, if not better. To top it all off, these quality tools won’t set you back a dime!

Here’s my roundup of 10 must-have social media marketing apps anyone who’s involved in marketing should have at their disposal. Obviously there are hundreds more I could have added to the list, but for the sake of time I wanted to focus on apps that are a cut above the rest.

Status Updates

Tweetdeck – Your direct link to what’s happening right now in the world around you. Recently acquired by Twitter, Tweetdeck integrates your on Twitter and Facebook profiles into easy to view streams and allows you to broadcast your updates across the  main social networks.

Echofon - One of the most solid Twitter apps available on the App Store. Its most noticeable features are its extremely fast speed, video previews and in-feed photo previews. Another neat feature is the Twitter name auto-complete. Because when you’re on the go, who has time to look up a username?!

Video

Viddy – The Huffington Post called Viddy an app that beautifies your videos. I for one, strongly agree. Viddy’s turns raw video footage into beautiful works of art to share with friends. Viddy user (aka “Viddyographers”) can upload content to the Viddy network and can also share it through their social network. Viddy is a perfect app to have at your disposal if you’re attending an event and want your view of it to really stand out.

Social Cam – Let’s be honest, recording video and uploading has been known to be a less than pleasant experience. That being said, most of the video shot today while on the go is being done via mobile devices.  Socialcam is a perfect app to help you  record video, or import clips from your camera roll. There’s no limit on how long your clip can be. You don’t need to think about uploading, because Socialcam automatically uploads the clip to its own servers in the background, and shares them from there.

Images

Instagram – A free app photography app is very addictive. Its ultra simple to use photo-sharing tool allows you to snap pictures and easily post them to your Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and Flickr accounts. You can follow others via Instagram’s social network, allowing you to view and comment on others’ photos. The real kicker comes from Instragram’s pre-defined filters, turning you from a novice camera owner into a professional photography nut.

Adobe Photoshop Express – Photoshop Express makes it easy to improve your photos. Choose from a variety of one-touch effects, or simply drag your finger across the screen to crop, rotate, or adjust color. Add artistic filters like Soft Focus or Sketch. Never fear: You can undo and redo changes until you get just the look you want, while saving a copy of the original.

Location

Waze - If you’re frequently hitting real world events and the meetup scene (as we recommend you do) you’ll want to make sure you get where you’re going. Waze is a no nonsense free navigation app that’s been gaining a lot of traction.

Foursquare – While on the go, why not tell your friends where you are, share pictures, get their comments, and insider tips on the location your visiting? Tons of places offer discounts and freebies to foursquare users. Foursquare makes it simple and fun to earn points and badges for doing the things you love, and possibly meet some new friends along the way.

Discovery

DoAT – DoAT is an innovative mobile search experience, which brings mobile web sites together seamlessly. A simple search on DoAT returns results in the form of the best mobile web sites from the best publishers and developers. DoAT also provides a connection between publishers’ mobile sites and mobile apps. A perfect example is searching for the word “hamburger @restaurants” which brings up the Yelp, Foodspotting and the Foursquare mobile- optimized web sites, among others. If the user goes into the Yelp mobile site and decides to go deeper into a particular result, the Yelp native app will launch, if it’s on the device.

Bing - Whatever you’re looking for, Bing can help you find it while making you a mobile smartypants along the way. Whether it’s down the street, the other side of the world or somewhere in between; Bing’s . Tell Bing what you are looking for with voice-activated search, even addresses, when you need to be hands-free.

Clearly there are more social-based apps than you can shake an iPhone at, but this will help set you in motion. On that note, I’d like to turn it back to you. What apps help you get your job done better, while on the go?

I just moved from a droid to an iphone over the weekend - so this list is gold for me. Had no idea there was a photoshop app - I've been struggling all weekend wanting to crop my pics. Thanks so much! :) Reply

Good list Oren. I'm still stuck on HootSuite over TweetDeck but it's all getting so close in that space. Comes down to the analytics after the tweets. I've not been able to give Waze its full do since I've not drive a car in over 4 months but when I'm back in the US, it will come in handy. Foursquare is a staple of my "Daily 4" apps, those I use every day. Instamap and Viddy, I love. And Do@t is a quite interesting entry for the mobile search space. Along with Missy, I didn't know about a Photoshop app so thanks for that recommendation. Reply
