Top 7 Services To Help You Monetize Your App

3 March, 2010 - Blog

One of the things we set out to do with AppsMarketing is not only to create awareness for mobile apps but also empower developers who’ve already launched and promoted their mobile apps.

With this post, we’re looking at the flip side and focusing on the services you need to know towards monetizing your mobile apps. Mobile app monetization is done in a verity of ways, in this case let’s talk specifically about monetizing your apps with ad networks.

MONETIZING YOUR MOBILE APPS

The fact remains that making money by distributing your app for free is a solid alternative to charging a minimal fee for each download. In the long run, it may tend to be more beneficial. Remember, we’re in a whole new era for marketing even more so for marketing on mobile phones.  Some developers are going the route of selling souped-up versions of their free apps, others are utilizing the mobile ad networks we’re about to mention bellow.  We recommend you get familiar with them and give them a test run to find the solution that best fits you.

We had to being with the usual suspect. With more than 7.1 ads served each month, the Google / Admob dynamic duo is now the biggest mobile ad network for mobile apps. Admob’s real strength stems from it’s solid combination of wide mobile ad reach and in depth analytics tracking and reporting.

Supported platforms: Android, iPhone, WebOS

adwhirl’s platform gives you complete control over maximizing your app revenue. AdWhirl allows developers to switch between different ad networks instantly without having to submit a new application to the AppStore. Of course, Admob took note back in 09 and bought adwhirl.

Supported platforms: Android,iPhone

Like adwhirl, Tapjoy allows you to serve ads from 10 different ad networks (ad-roll). Their unique model PPI (Pay Per Install) program that let’s you buy a set amount of install with a pre-paid budget.
Now all you really need is an app people will want.

Supported platforms: Android(Beta), iPhone

Smaato’s platform consists of 35 ad networks and a “Unique global ad network aggregation” to help you get maximum CPR.

Supported platforms: Android,iPhone

Recently announced that they will be offering the industry’s first ad network for iPad and other tablet devices. That makes them a player worth watching if you’re currently working on apps for the next generation devices.  Currently, SDKs are available for the Android, iPhone, and BlackBerry platforms.

Supported platforms:  Android, iPhone and Blackberry

mobclix is a ad exchange network that is build on about 20 ad networks. In additon, they’ve recently aquired Heartbeat, which allows developers to track their paid app revenue with Mobclix. Sidenote  - They also have a neat little app finder online tool here.

Supported platforms: Android,iPhone

ivdopia is also using rich media pre-roll videos rather than just simple banners. In other words, they bring videos ads straight to apps. Their inventory isn’t as vast as the competitors but they do offer a truly unique opportunity for their advertisers.

Supported platforms: Android,iPhone

We hope this roundup of mobile ad newroks will help you make most of your app. As always, please share you experience with us.

Good overview. The biggest problem with all these ad solutions that they do not support widget based app development (WRT, PhoneGap or JIL) and target only native app development. Reply

Hi there, I saw this list and wanted to add my company, Nexage, to it. We're an ad optimization and mediation platform that gives publishers and app developers one point of interface to access inventory from 35+ global ad networks. We have SDKs for Android, iPhone, iPad, and Blackberry, as well as an open API. Please let me know if you have any questions at marketing@nexage.com Cheers! Jessica Reply

Hi all, its good to see there are several options in monetizing mobile apps. I'm kinda new to this so I hoping this is an obvious question that has very clear answers; I would like to ask what the revenue models are i.e. Pay-per-view?pay-per-click and whats the average expected income per view or click per ad. I know this is an old article but I wanted to add my expereince. We were not sure what ad type was going to work best for our app which was stressing us all out as the SDK integration of several ad networks was not pretty. We settled on LeadBolt becuase they supported more ad types and we have been over the moon since. Reply
